Guyana edge Jamaica in Super Over battle to claim T20 Blaze Women’s title

Guyana recorded their first ever T20 Blaze Women’s title in dramatic fashion on Sunday, edging past defending champions Jamaica in a tense Super Over decider at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The match ended in a tie after both teams finished on 122 for 5 from their allotted 20 overs. It was Guyana who held their nerve in the one-over shootout, posting eight runs before restricting Jamaica to just three in reply to seal a famous victory.

The final was a rematch of the May 9 encounter, where Jamaica had defeated Guyana by 12 runs. That defeat remained the Guyanese women only loss of the tournament. Throughout the competition, they impressed with solid performances, defeating Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands to reach the final. 

The premier women’s T20 tournament got underway on May 1.

Guyana was captained by Shemaine Campbelle, with the squad featuring Cherry-Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Realeanna Grimmond, Sheneta Grimmond, Nyia Latchman, Mandy Mangru, Tramaine Marks, Katana Mentore, Plaffiana Millington, Ashmini Munisar, Cyanna Retemiah, Anestecia Venezuela, and Latoya Williams.

The team was coached by Tremayne Smartt.
