CARIFTA Games: Tianna Springer defends U20 400m title in Trinidad

Guyana’s Tianna Springer successfully defended her CARIFTA Games Under-20 400m title on Saturday, claiming gold for a third consecutive year at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad.

The 17-year-old track star clocked 53.07 seconds on April 19 to secure victory, providing the standout performance for Guyana on the opening day of the 52nd edition of the Games.

Springer finished ahead of Barbados’ Kadia Rock, who took silver in 53.52 seconds, while Jamaica’s Abrina Wright claimed bronze in 53.78.

Although she did not surpass her personal best of 52.31 seconds – the time that earned her the title in 2024 – the performance was enough to reaffirm her dominance in the event.

The Guyanese community turned out in strong numbers to support the Commonwealth Youth Games 400m champion, who also holds the South American Under-20 Championship record over the same distance.

Springer’s win delivered Guyana’s first gold medal of the Games and further cemented her status as one of the Caribbean’s brightest young sprint prospects.
