Cricket West Indies Thanks Nicholas Pooran Following International Retirement

Cricket West Indies has paid tribute to Trinidadian batsman Nicholas Pooran, who this week announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The board thanked him for his contributions to West Indies cricket during a career that spanned nearly a decade.

In an official statement, the board said “Cricket West Indies extends sincere gratitude and appreciation to Nicholas Pooran for his outstanding contributions to West Indies cricket. Nicholas officially informed the leadership of his decision to retire from international cricket, bringing to a close a significant chapter in his career.”

“A world-class player and a game changer, Nicholas leaves the game as the most capped West Indian in T20 Internationals with 106 matches and the leading T20I run-scorer with 2,275 runs. His performances on the field and influence within the team have made a lasting impact on West Indies cricket.”

It concluded: “We salute his achievements and thank him for the moments he has given fans across the region and beyond. We wish him all the very best in the next phase of his journey.”

Pooran, widely regarded as one of the world’s top T20 batters, represented the West Indies 167 times across formats. His decision to step away from the international stage will allow him to focus on a flourishing career in franchise cricket, where he remains a sought-after talent.

He opted out of the ongoing T20 series against England to rest after a busy Indian Premier League (IPL) season with the Lucknow Super Giants, and is also set to feature in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States this summer.

Pooran last played for the West Indies in December 2024 during a T20 series against Bangladesh. He has not featured in a one-day international since July 2023 and never played a Test match.

His retirement brings to an end a distinguished international career, particularly in T20 cricket, where he not only became the most capped West Indian but also the leading run-scorer in the format.
