Elite League Season VII Returns July 26

Clubs are now turning their attention to strategy ahead of Round Two of the Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League Season VII, which gets under way on July 26.

Slingerz Football Club lead the table by seven points after a dominant first-round performance, while defending champions Guyana Defence Force Football Club find themselves in fourth place.

Slingerz FC unbeaten in first round of Elite League

With Slingerz unbeaten under the guidance of new head coach Jamaal Shabazz — who parted company with the senior men’s national team in 2024 — rival clubs will be looking to make key adjustments in a bid to close the gap.

Slingerz, runners-up in the 2024 campaign, significantly strengthened their squad during the off-season — investing heavily in some of the country’s top talent, along with a handful of overseas signings.

Their efforts have paid off handsomely, with the club securing an impressive nine consecutive victories, amassing 27 points and scoring 43 goals since the March 9 kick-off.

Defending champions GDF FC (in green) sit fourth at the end of the first round.

By contrast, a depleted GDF side — the most decorated club in domestic football — endured a difficult round. Having lost several key players to Slingerz, the reigning champions were narrowly beaten 1-0 by their rivals in the final match of the round on June 16.

They ended the first phase in fourth place with four wins, one draw and four defeats, totalling 13 points.

Western Tigers currently sit second on 20 points, having recorded six wins, two draws and one loss. Just behind in third are the Guyana Police Force, who have collected 18 points from five wins, three draws and a single defeat.

Western Tigers and GPF clubs played out a draw in the final match of Round One on June 15

The bottom half of the table features Santos FC, Monedderlust FC, Fruta Conquerors FC, Ann’s Grove United FC, and Den Amstel FC.

Newcomers Mainstay Goldstars FC sit at the foot of the table, still in search of their first win after nine matches.

The Elite League remains the pinnacle of club football in Guyana and continues to serve as a pathway for players seeking professional contracts and scholarships abroad.
