Four Young Boxers Set for Curacao Championship with Olympic Champion

Four of Guyana’s brightest boxing prospects, including Caribbean gold medallist Joshua Tambaran, are set to compete at next month’s Curacao Championship, with the event expected to draw international attention thanks to the appearance of Olympic champion Erislandy Alvarez Borges of Cuba.

On May 3, Tambaran, who secured gold in the 54kg category at this year’s Caribbean Championship, will be joined in Willemstad by Roopesh Balgobin (38kg), Madray Junior (36kg), and Aluko Bess in the ring.

The event, billed as The International Boxing Event, will feature both amateur and professional fighters in action before a passionate crowd of boxing enthusiasts.

Borges, who captured Olympic gold in the men’s 63.5kg division after a narrow 3-2 victory over France’s Sofiane Oumiha at the Paris 2024 Games, will be a special guest at the tournament.

The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) confirmed the squad’s participation earlier this week, with national coach Lennox Daniels set to accompany the team.

“This proves just how important our Pepsi-sponsored Michael Parris Under-16 Championship is to the GBA,” said GBA President Steve Ninvalle. “It’s through this tournament that we identify the top young talent from across Guyana, representing our affiliated gyms.”

The event marks another key step in Guyana’s continued investment in youth boxing talent as the country builds towards future regional and international success.
