Galo White makes history for Guyana in Brazil Grande Premio

Slingerz Racing Stable’s Galo White etched his name into the history books at the weekend, becoming the first horse from a Guyanese stable to compete in Brazil’s most prestigious horse racing event — the 93rd running of the Grade 1 Grande Premio Brasil.

Drawn in post position 15 in a fiercely competitive international field, Galo White sharply and seized the early lead, setting a strong pace through the opening stages of the race.

Galo White crossed the finish line in 5th place

However, with around 120 metres remaining, the colt began to fade and was eventually overhauled by the leading pack, battling bravely to finish in a highly creditable fifth place.

It marks a landmark moment for Guyanese horse racing, as no horse representing the South American nation had previously featured in the elite Group 1 contest held annually in Rio de Janeiro.

The Grande Premio Brasil regularly attracts top-class thoroughbreds from across the continent and beyond, and Galo White’s qualification and performance underline the growing stature of the Vergenoegen-based Slingerz Racing Stable on the international stage.

Slingerz have already made waves domestically, dominating the local racing circuit with stars such as Olympic Kremlin and John Bull, and now look poised to expand their footprint further afield.

Galo White is set to return to action on August 17 at the Rising Sun Turf Club in the Guyana Cup, where he will line up alongside stablemate and last year’s winner, Olympic Kremlin.
