Garcia leads heading into final stage of Independence Cycle Race

Colombia’s Matteo Garcia heads into Sunday’s final stage of the 42nd Independence Three-Stage Cycle Road Race as the clear favourite after dominating the first two stages on Saturday.

Riding for Team Raiders (Trinidad and Tobago), Garcia posted an overall time of 4:02:02, winning Stage One from Corriverton to New Amsterdam in 1:41:28, and Stage Two from D’Edward Village to Liliendaal, a tough 62-mile test.

Garcia was pushed hard by local rider Aaron Newton (KFC Evolution), who finished just three seconds behind in the opening stage, but couldn’t close the gap in Stage Two.

Adam Alexander (Team Raiders), Jaiden Neaves, and Christopher Griffith are also in the top six, but Garcia remains the man to beat.

The final stage is a 62-mile circuit race in Providence, East Bank Demerara, replacing the usual Linden route due to road works.

The National Sports Commission is organising this year’s edition of the race.
