Guyana bolster squad with star sisters for Suriname showdown

Guyana have strengthened their squad with a major boost ahead of next month’s Georgetown Women’s Basketball Classic, naming professional star Joy Adams and the highly rated Ramlall sisters – Amisha, Ashna, and Arshia – in their final roster to face Suriname.

The international fixture, set for August 10–11 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, is a key step in reviving women’s basketball in Guyana and the wider Caribbean. The event is hosted by the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF), with the home side aiming to make a strong statement on their return to the regional court.

The two South American neighbours share a rich history of competition across various sports, and their latest basketball encounter promises to add a fresh chapter to that rivalry.

Professional forward Adams, from Amelia’s Ward, Linden, has enjoyed a successful career in Europe and previously represented Guyana at the inaugural FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup in Miami. However, this marks her debut for the national side in the traditional 5-on-5 format – on home soil.

“I’m excited to finally see Joy Adams suit up in Guyana… it’s long overdue,” said GBF President Michael Singh in a statement. “And having the Ramlall sisters join the squad is something special. They are the future of Guyanese basketball.”

The inclusion of the Ramlall trio – standout performers at Rosemount High School in Minnesota, United States – adds a youthful, international edge to Coach Willon Cameron’s roster. The sisters are expected to bring speed, versatility, and flair to the court as they make their international debut.

“This series is extremely important for the growth of women’s basketball in Guyana,” Singh added.

Coach Cameron, who also leads the Georgetown-based Colts Basketball Club, has assembled a squad combining experience and promising homegrown talent.

The local contingent includes Jamaicy Ogle, Keisha Copperfield, Shanill James, Lanasha Mohammed, Malia Samuels, Sherese Leacock, Natalya Clarke (Kwakwani), Akeelah Campbell (Linden), Junelly Paddy (Berbice), Ronaya Grant, Brean Ritchie, Kean Andrews, and Rehaicia Romain (Linden).

Cameron will be supported by assistant coach Alisande Jaiserrisingh—who recently represented Guyana at the FIBA Americas Adelante Forum—and team manager Warren Wilson, head coach of the University of Guyana Trojans.

“I’m eager to see how our senior women stack up against Suriname. This is a great opportunity to test our competitive level and start building chemistry as we look ahead to more international competition,” Cameron said.
