Guyana’s athletes making headlines ahead of World Athletics Championships

Guyana’s athletes are making headlines on the international stage as preparations intensify for this year’s World Athletics Championships, with Emanuel Archibald setting a new national long jump record of 8.22 metres at the recent Atlanta City Games.

The South American Championships silver medallist and Pan American Games bronze medallist secured victory on May 17 with the record-breaking leap, surpassing his previous national best of 8.12 metres set in 2019.

Based in Jamaica, Archibald has been in strong form this season and currently ranks 37th in the world in the men’s long jump. He also represents Guyana in the 100 metres.

Joining him in the spotlight is fellow Guyanese sprinter Daniel Williams, who set a new national 100m record on May 11 with a time of 10.06 seconds.

With both athletes hitting top form, Guyana’s track and field prospects look promising as the countdown to September’s World Championships in Tokyo continues.
