Kwakwani wins three titles at schools basketball festival

Kwakwani Secondary School added more silverware to their growing collection this year, claiming three titles on Sunday at the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) KFC National Schools Basketball Festival which was held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown.

Kwakwani, the most celebrated school basketball team in Guyana, secured victories in the Boys’ U-16, Girls’ U-18, and Senior Boys’ U-18 categories. Their only slip came in the Boys’ U-14 final, where they were edged 38–35 by St Rose’s High in a tightly contested clash.

In the U-16 final, Kwakwani held off President’s College 39–33, with Marlon Mendonca and Simeon Sinclair each scoring 10 points. The girls’ side followed up with a 26–22 win over President’s College. Sherse Leacock led the way with 10 points, while Brianna Benjamin added 7 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals.

Kwakwani completed their treble with a commanding 64–45 win over the Government Technical Institute (GTI) in the U-18 boys’ final. Tyreek Sampson was the standout performer, dropping 22 points, with support from Lenrick Seaford and Sinclair, who each contributed 10.

Dallas Thomas was named Best Coach of the tournament, while Hururu Secondary earned awards for Best Sportsmanship and Best Emerging Team.

A total of 52 teams competed in the tournament, which tipped off on June 29 and concluded on July 6.
