Top taekwondo athlete Ceili Peterson is currently in Germany representing Guyana at the FISU World University Games. Competing in the 49kg weight class, Peterson is Guyana’s lone representative at the prestigious multi-sport event, which runs from July 16 to 27 across the Rhine-Ruhr region.
She began her medal campaign on July 20 in the Women’s Kyorugi at Messe Essen Halle in the city of Essen. Peterson, ranked among the top 20 globally in her division, also represented Guyana at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Speaking to the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), she said: “Discipline is more important than motivation. Even when I feel discouraged, I show up and give my best — because setbacks are opportunities for growth.”
In a statement, the GOA praised her continued excellence on the international stage.
“She has represented Guyana at several major international competitions within the Olympic cycle and continues to demonstrate excellence, discipline, and national pride on the global stage, earning respect and admiration for her skill, commitment, work ethic, and quiet determination.”
