Austin Breaks Guyana U20 400m Record

Malachi Austin set a new Guyanese Under-20 national record in the 400 metres on Saturday, clocking 46.29 seconds to win his heat at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Alumni Gold meet.

Competing at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium on April 26, the 18-year-old produced what LSU described in an official statement as a “stellar performance”, shaving 0.06 seconds off his previous national U20 mark of 46.35 seconds, set in 2024.

The result comes just a week after he opened his 2025 outdoor season with a silver medal at the CARIFTA Games in Grenada, where he ran 46.54 seconds in the final of the boys’ Under-20 400 metres.

Austin joined LSU in 2024, having already established himself as one of the Caribbean’s most promising young sprinters. He earned his place through a standout junior career that included a silver medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games and a gold medal in the 400m at the 2024 CARIFTA Games.

He is also part of the celebrated mixed 4x400m relay teams at both the Youth Commonwealth Games and the CARIFTA Games.
