Abary Tennis Club steps up youth drive with Berbice outreach

The Abary Tennis Club has stepped up its youth talent identification efforts with a one-hour introductory session with students of the Berbice Educational Institute at the Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue in Georgetown.

Coaches Andre Lopes and Immanuel Barker led the March 15 session, which not only introduced the fundamentals of the sport but also allowed the club to scout for raw talent with the potential to develop further.

The class focused on basic techniques, footwork, and coordination, while also instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

While cricket and football continue to dominate Guyana’s sporting scene, tennis has seen steady growth in recent years, boosted by grassroots initiatives and increased backing from local clubs and the Guyana Tennis Association.

Abary’s outreach forms part of a broader push to grow the game in underserved areas, particularly beyond the capital, Georgetown.

The club has signalled its intention to expand its youth development efforts, with more sessions and programmes planned to help build a lasting tennis culture in Berbice and across the region.
