Teen sprint star Gout set for senior debut at World Championships

Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to make his debut at a major senior international competition when he lines up in the 200m at the World Athletics Championships in Japan this September.

The championships will take place from September 13 – 21 in Tokyo, marking the 16-year-old’s first appearance on the senior global stage.

Gout rose to prominence last year with a silver-medal finish in the 200m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, and has continued to impress on the domestic and international scene.

Speaking to Athletics Australia on April 23, Gout said: “I’m super excited to be picked to run the 200 in Tokyo at the World Championships! That’s what we’ve been aiming for.”

The teenager first made headlines in December 2024 after breaking Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt’s long-standing under-16 200m world record at the Australian All Schools Championships.

Earlier this year, he added a national senior title to his growing list of accolades, winning the 200m at the Australian Athletics Championships in a wind-assisted time of 19.84 seconds.

With his explosive speed and composure beyond his years, Gout is being tipped as one of the most exciting young talents in world athletics.
