Veterans Fernandes and Ince reign supreme at elite quash championships

Nicolette Fernandes and Daniel Ince rolled back the years at the ENet-sponsored National Elite Squash Championships, capturing the Women’s and Men’s titles respectively at the National Racquet Centre in Georgetown.

Fernandes, 42, delivered a commanding performance to claim what is believed to be her 12th national title. She swept aside 31-year-old Mary Fung-A-Fat in straight games, winning 11-8, 11-0, 11-5 in the Women’s Elite final. The second game, in particular, underscored Fernandes’ sharpness and veteran composure.

A former world No. 19 and Commonwealth Games competitor, Fernandes has long been Guyana’s leading female player and continues to set the standard for local squash.

In the men’s final, 35-year-old Daniel Ince outlasted his younger cousin, 21-year-old Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, in a fiercely contested match. Ince clinched the title 3-0 (12-10, 11-4, 12-10).
