West Indies Breakout League: Kevlon Anderson leads run charts

Guyana Rainforest Rangers top-order batter Kevlon Anderson currently leads the run-scoring charts in the inaugural West Indies Breakout League, despite the side losing their opening three matches.

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) official table shows the right-handed batsman on 106 runs across his first three innings, edging out Alick Athanaze of the Windward Islands Infernos, who has 102. Jamaica’s Joshua Da Silva is close behind on 100, while Kirk McKenzie (Jamaica Titans) and Jyd Goolie (Trinidad and Tobago Legions) follow with 94 and 90 runs, respectively.

The 25-year-old began his campaign with a composed 58 in Guyana Rainforest Rangers’ opening match on April 25, when they won the toss and elected to field against the Windward Islands Volcanoes. The Volcanoes posted a formidable 166 from their 20 overs, and despite Anderson’s efforts, the Rangers fell short, reaching 141 for 9 in reply.

He followed that with a knock of 27 on April 26 against hosts Trinidad and Tobago Legions. The Legions set a challenging target of 173 for 6, and while Guyana remained competitive throughout, they finished on 160 for 9 — narrowly beaten by 13 runs.

In their most recent outing, against the Jamaica Titans, Anderson added 21 runs as the Rangers came agonisingly close once again. Chasing 166, Guyana were edged out by just three runs, closing on 163 for 8 in another tightly contested finish.

Anderson has also made his presence felt in the power-hitting department, sitting fourth on the list for most sixes with four to his name. Athanaze and Da Silva lead the way with seven each, while Goolie has struck five. Trinidad’s Joshua James joins Anderson in joint-fourth, also with four maximums.

Now in its debut season, the Breakout League is a platform for young and fringe players to impress selectors ahead of senior regional and international opportunities.

While Anderson’s consistency at the top of the order has been a rare bright spot for the struggling Rainforest Rangers, the side will be under growing pressure to convert individual success into collective results.

Six teams are competing in the T20 tournament – Barbados Pelicans, Guyana Rainforest Rangers, Jamaica Titans, Leeward Islands Thunder, Trinidad & Tobago Legions, and Windward Islands Infernos.

The competition continues this week, with Guyana desperate to break their losing streak and lift themselves off the bottom of the table when they face the Leeward Islands Infernos on May 4.
